Union Minister Jitendra Singh, while presiding over a review meeting with senior officials of CSIR-IIIM on June 8, expressed his optimism about the project’s prospects. He stated, “The Cannabis Research Project of CSIR-IIIM Jammu is a first of its kind in India and has great potential to produce export quality medicine for neuropathies, cancer, and epilepsy.” The Minister also highlighted the project’s ability to attract investments to the Jammu and Kashmir region.
During the meeting, Dr. Jitendra Singh hailed the signing of a scientific agreement between CSIR-IIIM and IndusScan as a historic event, not just for Jammu and Kashmir but for the entire nation. This collaboration has the potential to generate medicines that were previously imported from foreign countries.
Commending CSIR-IIIM for its groundbreaking initiative, Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the institute’s long-standing reputation as the oldest scientific research institute in India. He highlighted CSIR-IIIM’s historic achievements, including the discovery of mint in the 1960s, its position as the center of the “purple revolution,” and now, with the Cannabis Research Project, its elevation in the realm of scientific research in India.
Furthermore, the Minister called for greater synergy between institutions such as CSIR-IIIM, IIM, IIT, and AIIMS. Recognizing the proximity of these institutions within a few kilometers in Jammu, he emphasized the importance of leveraging their expertise and resources. Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized, “It is imperative to look for various technicalities involved in it, like the marketing strategies that can be done through IIM, clinical trials through AIIMS, technical support through IIT, etc., as all these institutions are only situated in a radius of a few kilometers in Jammu, which is now the hub of education in India.”
